OREGON - Acclaimed artist Daniel Heyman, whose recent work includes portraits of former Abu Ghraib detainees, will present Linfield College's Frazee Lecture on Tuesday. His talk, "Social Justice and Spirituality: The Journey from Art to Action," is slated for 7:30 p.m. April 5 in Melrose Hall's Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium. There is no charge. Traditionally, the Frazee Lecture has explored the relationship between religion with other disciplines, said college chaplain David Massey. But Heyman will focus on art as a spiritual endeavor and catalyst for change. "Art has a long history of reflecting and defining our religious practices and can be a voice for social justice, calling us to see our common humanity," Massey said. Following the lecture, three respondents will provide additional perspective. Brian Winkenweder, associate professor of art history and visual culture at Linfield, will provide historic background. Kanaan Kanaan of Portland State University will discuss art in the Muslim community. Janet Elfers, director of member relations at Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, will offer a contemporary Christian perspective. [Source: News Register]
