AUSTRALIA - Holy Cross student Liam Van Deth has won a major award in the Sydney religious art competition, the Clancy Art Prize. The year 12 student was awarded the Acquisitive Executive Director’s Award for There Where You Are, an oil on canvas portrait of Australia’s first saint, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Liam, who was hoping to get a university art scholarship in the USA said he was surprised at the win. “I had just returned from the USA and only had a quick turnaround time, so I completed this portrait in three days,” Liam said. The Clancy Prize is a religious art exhibition for Sydney’s Catholic Secondary Schools. This year’s theme was, “There where you are, you will find God”, which is said to be a quote from Mary MacKillop from 1874. [link]
