DEPICTING YOURSELF AS JESUS CHRIST

THE BIGGEST RELIGIOUS ART STORY of this past week was about the new Jesus tattoo of international soccer sensation and sex symbol, David Beckham (See Art of the Week). There are at least 44 news stories online about it today, and the stories raise the question of whether we should ever depict ourselves as Jesus Christ? The artwork by LA tattoo artist Mark Mahoney, depicts Beckham as Jesus Christ carried off by his three little boys (depicted as cute, chubby little cherubs). Would you commission a tattoo or other artwork of yourself as Jesus Christ? If not yourself, then who? If the bodies of Jews & Christians are Temples of God, and Christians are to model our lives after Jesus, why not depict yourself in your own Jesus art tattoo, just like Beckham?
